Custom Hoist Keeps FPSO Operations Steady

Deployment of Low Headroom Air Hoists on an FPSO Vessel

An offshore Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel required specialised lifting solutions to support maintenance and operational tasks in confined spaces. The vessel’s engine room and other key operational areas have restricted headroom, making standard hoisting equipment unsuitable.

Customer Specification

The customer required 3 off 3-tonne low headroom air hoists. Key specifications of the equipment included:

Compact Design: Optimized for tight spaces typical in FPSO operations.

Height of Lift: 28 metres to handle extended vertical lifting needs.

Safety in Motion: A pneumatic beam brake to counteract the effects of sea swell, ensuring stability and control during lifting operations.

Environmental Adaptation: ATEX Zone 1 compliance for safe operation in hazardous offshore environments, necessitating specific materials and coatings.

Air-Powered Mechanism: Leveraged compressed air available onboard, eliminating the risk of electrical sparking—a critical safety consideration in hazardous, explosive environments.

Durability: Marine-specification paint, bronze-sprayed hooks, and a stainless-steel chain collector to withstand corrosive marine environments, including salt spray and humidity.

The hoist was installed in a critical maintenance zone, enabling tasks such as lifting pump motors and heavy machinery components for repairs. Its reliability and smooth operation allowed the crew to perform essential tasks efficiently while adhering to stringent safety standards.

The success of this solution demonstrated the suitability of the hoist for the vessel’s operational challenges and paved the way for further integration.

Expanded Requirement: 9-Tonne Low Headroom Air Hoist

Following the successful supply of the 3-tonne hoists, the customer identified the need for heavier lifting capacity to manage bulkier equipment. A 9-tonne low headroom air hoist is now in production for deployment in another area of the FPSO.

Conclusion

The procurement and deployment of these low headroom air hoists highlight the customer’s commitment to operational efficiency and safety in challenging offshore environments. By adopting customized solutions, the FPSO operator ensures enhanced productivity while maintaining strict adherence to industry safety and environmental standards. The ongoing success of these installations reflects the effectiveness of robust, tailored lifting solutions in maritime applications.
